Let’s see some of the essential features of the May windows 10 2020 update. Numerous changes will be a significant improvement for many users.

Windows Search optimization

In previous articles, we already commented that the update would come with a considerable improvement for the Windows 10 file indexer. Microsoft has been working to make Windows Search as efficient as possible, and the results will come in the May update.

In this situation, the Windows Search tool had a significant problem: the Windows Search file indexer sometimes caused excessive CPU and hard disk usage, leading to a computer slowdown.
To avoid this, the May windows 10 2020 update will introduce an algorithm that will control the CPU and hard disk usage of Windows Search. When this usage reaches excessive levels, the algorithm will make sure to manage the file indexer to avoid slowing down the computer.

It will lower the tool’s pace to the level necessary to control the situation and avoid problems in the rest of the system. That will mean a speed improvement, mainly for computers with HDD.
Thanks to the windows 10 2020 update, Windows Search will become much brighter. Aside from reducing the indexer’s activity when you use too much CPU or hard drive, other situations have also been established where it will work to a minimum.

For example, when Gaming Mode, Power Saving Mode, or Low-Performance Mode is enabled, the indexer will reduce its activity. And it will also be when the device battery is below 50%, and the screen is off.

Monitors specialized in professional versions of Windows 10

As you probably already know, Windows 10 has several different versions designed to adapt to users with very different needs. Of course, some of the most potent versions are for professional activities.

Since users of these Windows 10 have to carry out particular activities, an option has been added to designate specialized monitors in Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Pro for Workstations.
You choose a specific task by designating a monitor as a specialized monitor. Thus, instead of displaying the desktop or all the programs available on the computer. That particular monitor will be dedicated solely to the job assigned to it.

This feature can be handy for systems dedicated exclusively to simulators or video games, audio and image workstations, screen mosaics, and medical imaging devices.

To use this option, users of the Windows 10 versions mentioned above can activate it in Settings> System> Display> Advanced display settings.

Transforming Cortana into a personal assistant

windows 10 2020 update

Microsoft is not satisfied with the idea that Cortana is simply a digital assistant. The goal is to make Cortana a personal productivity assistant, and the first steps to achieve this will be taken at the May 2020 Update.

With the changes, Cortana is expected to help users manage their tasks and time and connect with people more easily. So, the app will go through a considerable facelift, allowing you to better adapt to your new role.

For starters, Cortana will no longer pin on the taskbar. From now on, it will behave like any other program, and we can move it around the screen and resize the window to suit our preferences.

On the other hand, it will also be much easier to configure, especially when it comes to input methods. You can access specific options to designate from Cortana settings if you want to interact with the Windows assistant by voice or writing.

And another significant change is the implementation of new skills that allow the management of personal tasks. Specifically, three skills will be available: email, calendar, and Windows management.

The email skill has a distinct function: managing email through Cortana. By interacting with the assistant, we can, for example, see all the emails a person has sent us or even ask Cortana to send an email to a specific person with the text we want.
The calendar skill also takes care of distinct tasks. Its primary function is to create and manage meetings with other people, and it will also allow you to set reminders of the sessions you want.

Also, using Microsoft Teams, you can join the meeting directly by asking Cortana. That would significantly speed up some everyday tasks, eliminating several intermediate steps.

Finally, Windows management skills are intended for more general tasks. Among other functions, it will allow you to make changes to the device configuration and open programs and folders by asking the assistant.

New Quick searches

Apart from the performance changes we have explained before, Windows Search will also undergo some modifications in terms of functionality, focusing mainly on web searches.

To adapt the frequent searches, a series of quick search options will implement in the Windows Search start section. These will include weather, major news, historical events, and movie releases in theaters in your area.

Also, the previews that Windows Search displays of the web results have also been modified. The main results will keep in the left column, and a simplified version of the web result will appear on the right side with the most relevant information.

Beyond web results, the overall results of this search bar will be somewhat more intuitive. Until now, if we did not type everything correctly, the search bar did not show any results. To avoid this, the spell checker has improved, so the results will appear even if there are typing errors.

Another essential feature that will come with the big update in May aims to make the results more understandable for users, making the system more comfortable.

For this, in those searches, the results seem unrelated to the search terms. A section will include information explaining the relationship between the results and the conditions we have entered.

Much more refined notification system

The Windows 10 notification panel can be convenient in certain circumstances. But the settings in the notifications section are very unintuitive, and what should be a helpful tool can become something that many users prefer to ignore almost completely.

Microsoft they were already aware that the system was highly upgradeable. In previous updates, they have tried to make it less invasive, controlling it with tools such as the Concentration Assistant.

Beyond making it not annoying for users, Microsoft intends that the notification system become something we want to use today. Several options have been added to simplify its use and improve the overall experience.

The first change can see in the notification panel itself. Each time a new notification appears, you will have the option to disable all notifications for that program.

This option shows in each notification as to the typical gear icon. And apart from allowing you to delete messages from a specific app, you will also have direct access to the Notifications and actions settings panel in case we want to make more precise changes.

The notification panel will also include a shortcut to the same notification settings panel. It is implemented for users’ convenience since it saves a few steps from accessing the settings.
And the Notifications and Actions Settings panel is not sparing any changes either. For starters, several of the options available in this configuration panel will now include images showing examples of individual settings’ impact.

Another option we can find in the Notifications settings window is to silence all notifications. That had to do from Sound Settings, but after the update, it will go to the own notifications section.

Finally, to make all notifications more intuitive, a new environment will be added to the Notification settings window, allowing you to show the recently sent messages programs.
That is to help users find such programs more efficiently. Suppose we want to make changes to notifications we mistakenly removed from the desktop panel. In that case, we have to manually search a list of all the programs installed on our computer.

With the new option, the program will appear at the top of the list since it will have had recent activity, saving us a lot of time when making any changes.

Temperature control arrives in Task Manager

Suppose you are concerned about the state of your computer. It is expected that one of the data that you are interested in knowing is the temperature of various parts. Ultimately, overheating can pose a real risk to devices.

When it comes to graphics cards, every precaution is little. Knowing the prices that the most powerful on the market can achieve. Heeding requests from many users, Microsoft will include information about the graphics card temperature in Task Manager.

The temperature will appear in degrees Celsius, along with the rest of the graphics card’s performance details. Of course, the drivers of your graphics card must appropriately update. Since there could be no errors in the reading.

However, it should keep in mind that the temperature reading will only be available on computers with a dedicated graphics card. At the moment, integrated graphics cards will not have this type of support.

Restoring Windows 10 from the internet

When we have a severe problem with the computer because the operating system is not running correctly. If we need to restore Windows 10 for any other reason, resetting the PC may be the best alternative.

Restoring PCs involves reinstalling the operating system and eliminating any program that does not belong. Although luckily, Windows 10 allows us to keep all our files. So that we do not lose anything in the process.
Until now, any reset required local Windows 10 files to exist. The operating system installation used those files to perform the reinstallation. But with the new Windows 10 update, the option to download the operating system from the internet will also be enabled instead of depending on local files already present on the computer.

It may be more reliable since the installation would start from completely clean files instead of using potentially damaged ones. And if you have a good internet connection, it can also speed up the process a lot.
For similar results in speed and reliability, users had to have installation means. For example, a USB drive in which the operating system installation tool is configured correctly. Not all users are capable of creating such media. So the new internet install option will make resetting PCs much more accessible to the average user.

Virtual desktops, now with their name

Those who use their computers for very different tasks. Work, study, and leisure are probably familiar with virtual desktops. They allow tasks to be isolated on other desktops. As if we had multiple monitors but without actually having those screens.

So that we can organize these virtual desktops accurately and find the one we need the first time. The May update will implement the option to assign names to each of the desktops we create.
Assigning names is relatively straightforward. You just have to access the task view (WIN + Tab). And the name given to them by default will appear on the images of each virtual desktop. If we click on that name, an edit field will open, allowing us to assign the word we want.

Therefore, instead of the standard “Desktop 1”, “Desktop 2,” and other numbered desks. We can name each virtual desktop with something that more clearly reflects the tasks we are carrying out. Thus facilitating navigation.
