Asus ROG Phone 2, Analysis And Opinion

The Best

  • 120 Hz AMOLED display
  • TOP 2019 performance
  • Stereo sound at the height
  • Battery for two days

The Worst

  • It is not for all budgets
  • Android 9
  • The included fan does not improve performance
  • The cameras comply, but little else

Before continuing with our analysis of the Asus ROG Phone 2, we leave you the technical characteristics of the terminal.

If we go back to the first mobile specifically created to play, we have to go to the launch of the Nokia N-Gage, but if we talk about gaming mobiles, we must go to 2017 and the start of the Razer Phone.

Two years later, another company linked to hardware created to play at the highest level launched the second version of its mobile gaming. We already have the Asus ROG Phone 2, an absolute beast that is “stuck” to a massive battery.

Analysis of the Asus ROG Phone 2 by sections:

  • Design: continuous and with a considerable size
  • Performance: Snapdragon 855+, top beyond doubt
  • Screen: large that does not decipher in quality
  • Sound: at the height to get fully into the game
  • Software: Android 9 with software to replace a console
  • Gaming: this is how to play with a high-level gaming mobile
  • Accessories: not included (and a fan that doesn’t do much)
  • Autonomy: there was a cell phone with a battery stuck: 6,000 mAh with a fast charge
  • Cameras: three sensors, not very versatile, but complies
  • Conclusion: if you want a pocket console, it is an alternative to consider

It is continuous in design and unquestionably significant.

We begin the analysis of the Asus ROG Phone 2, speaking, as usual, of the design. We can not ignore that it is a massive terminal, cultivated, dense, and not suitable for all pockets (literally).
Asus has some of the most striking devices in the field of gaming, from their laptops to their graphics cards and some motherboards that give for design items, and the ROG Phone does not hide. Every millimeter of the ROG Phone 2 tells us, “eh, this is from another paste,” and so it is.

We have a front in which the screen occupies 80.3% (a front more used than the last generation) and in which we find the two speakers, one above and one below. These chromed edges are in copper color and little else — no notch or hole on the screen.

The back is the most interesting. It is a terminal identical to the one launched a year ago with a large glass rear if we have a futuristic design that “lights up” like the rainbow depending on where the light source is as well as the “Republic of Gamers” as a gaming badge and the RGB backlit Asus logo (which can be disabled).

We do not have a fingerprint reader since it is integrated into the screen, but that other module in which we have passive slits of heat dissipation. The dual camera stands out, but it is not an exaggeration.

On the right side, we have the lock button and the volume up / down button, and on the left, we have the expansion port for the accessories, protected by a rubber element.

Top performance in its category: the most potent mobile of 2019?

Any current mobile, regardless of its range, is a terminal that serves to play video games entirely. The 7XX and 8XX SoC of Snapdragon and the Samsung and Huawei processors offer exceptional performance, but when we talk about “mobile gaming,” we know what we will find: the latest hardware.

The ROG Phone 2 features the Snapdragon 855+ processor with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM. It is a 7-nanometer processor that has a cluster of 8 cores distributed as follows:

  • One core Kryo 485 at 2.96 GHz
  • Three cores Kryo 485 at 2.42 GHz
  • Four cores Kryo 485 at 1.78 GHz

It is a very original configuration that takes advantage of the strong cores when the apps require it (warming more and increasing the consumption), but that uses the rest of the low consumption if it is not necessary so much power.

As we always say, these tests allow us to compare terminals in raw power, but the important thing is the conjunction between software and hardware. In this case, however, the mobile is going perfect at all times, thanks to a relatively clean version of Android 9.0 that played just enough to include the “X Mode” and a game mode.

It is indisputable that it is a powerful mobile and, in our tests (we have played intensively to some of the most demanding titles). The dissipation has worked perfectly thanks to a large body that is responsible for that dissipation. And passive grooves that allow residual heat to go outside. Without the need for the glass to do all the work.

The GPU is the Adreno 640 at a frequency of 700 MHz, and then we leave you a comparison in the different synthetic tests of the ROG Phone 2 with some of the latest and most potent terminals launched in 2019:

Now, why do we want so much power? One of the answers is the screen, with a refresh rate more typical of a gaming monitor than of a phone.

An AMOLED screen that sizes 120 Hz

Given the power of a terminal like the ROG Phone 2, we must move to another strong point: the screen. The screen is essential in mobile like this to enjoy video games that increasingly contain more minor details. In any mobile, a good monitor is valued highly, but in one like this, focused on content consumption, it is even more critical, and the Asus ROG Phone does not disappoint.

How does Hz affect gaming screens?

Before talking about feelings, let’s talk about figures. We are facing a panel of 6.59 “with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. We have analyzed many mobile phones in recent months and maintain what we have said in all (except in the Razer Phone 2): if it is mobile gaming, an aspect ratio like this is not appropriate.

The reason is that information is lost because this type of diagonal does not support games. The same goes for movies and series. 21: 9 shows bands at the top/bottom, and 16: 9 (the vast majority) with sidebands. The enlarged image, but we have the same problem of lack of information.

The panel shows spectacular colors with great depth because it is AMOLED, HDR10, and meets 108% of the DCI-P3 color space. It is magnificent to see content on the Asus ROG Phone 2: the viewing angles are more than correct, we can configure the colors to be vivid or colder and natural, and the blacks are “black” thanks to that AMOLED panel.

For the rest, we have the opportunity to make sound through the 3.5 mm jack port (also with DTS X). In short, a sound section that rounds out an exciting audiovisual experience.
Android 9 is very fluid and with customization to play

The Asus ROG Phone 2 arrives with Android 9.0, and there is no update to Android 10 insight. We are facing an interface with a basic level of customization that has only touched to include fascinating basic settings to play. And to replace the lack of Android 9. Such as the absence of a dark mode that is present, thanks to the customization of Asus.
